Yeah, you’ve probably heard it all before, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail” etc etc, blah, blah…
But how much planning do you need to do? I mean, if you’re an entrepreneur you just know when something will work, right? You just go with the flow. You’re an ideas person. You’re don’t want to get bogged down with planning. Right?
Wrong! We’re not talking about business plans, here. I’m talking about a plan of action to achieve your goals. Do you even have goals? You might be sitting there saying to yourself, “of course I have goals”, but I’m going to challenge that!
I know too many people whose goal is to get out of debt, or replace their income, or control their future, or achieve freedom from a job etc etc.
These are not goals! If these are your ‘goals’ then I’m about to piss on your bonfire and tell you you’ll never achieve them. Most people tell me they want money, but it’s never about the money. You don’t actually want money, you want what money can deliver. But telling me that your ‘goal’ is to get out of debt is utter crap!
You’re sick of your job, or not having one. You don’t earn enough money and so you’re in debt. You’re now aspiring to get back to ZERO!!!! Seriously?!?! You’re goal is to be at ZERO?!?! You’ll still have the crappy job and the problems that got you in debt in the first place, and what you’d like to do is go back to the begging of the same journey that took you down the road to where you are now?!?!
Some of the people I coach may not like my response to these kind of ‘goals’ but whoever said that being a coach or mentor meant being nice? Since when did being nice get someone to where they really want to be?
There is a very simple test to see whether your goals are real goals, and that is to paint a picture. If you think your goals are real and solid enough, then paint me a picture of them. What will it feel like to achieve your goal? Seriously, sit and close your eyes and imagine your goal. The chances are, that unless you have a real goal that is tangible and that you can focus on every day for at least 30 minutes, then you haven’t got any goals. You’ve just got a few wishes. Everyone has a wish. Most people wish that they could win the lottery; that’s never going to get them anywhere in life.
When you do have a goal that you’re obsessed about, that is when you’ll put some real plans together to achieve your goal. Until you do that, you will keep on failing at everything you do. FACT!
Your plans should be a series of steps towards achieving your goal(s). Put some effort into it. Ask yourself some hard questions. What is it that you really want? What would each day look like? Where will you wake up in the morning? How will you feel? What can you see?Until you understand that, you’re never going to get anywhere.
Rant over, I’m going to catch a plane back from JFK to Heathrow right now and I look forward to hearing your REAL goals below in the comments…

Hi Simon,
I enjoyed this post. I’m at the beginning of starting a new business -one that (of course) I’m pretty excited about. The idea is to start small and see how things go. It allows me to risk a minimal financial investment and prove my venture. BECAUSE it’s so small, I’ve neglected to make a plan: “It’s all in my head”.
Thanks for the reminder. I’ll put one together tonight.

Hi Patryk,
I’m glad to hear that my post has prompted someone to start some planning. I come across so many people who are struggling or suffered a failed business, and when you ask for it, they can’t provide a proper business plan…
Having a plan ‘in your head’ is the worst place to keep it!
To Your Success!
Simon.
