The Best Home Based Business Ideas

OK, so you’re sick and tired of chasing ‘opportunity’ after ‘opportunity’, each one promising to make you millions the in the process, whilst the reality is that all you seem to do is spend money buying somebody’s ‘secret formula’ to business success.

Well, the truth is that there are legitimate business opportunities that will allow you to make money or a full-time income from home, and some of them are even Internet based.

The good news is, that many business opportunities do not require massive cash investments to get going, and will reward those who are prepared to work hard and diligently strive for success.

The problem is, that there are too many people around today who have what I call the ‘lottery mentality’. They want something for nothing, think that the world owes them a living, and at the first sign of any hard work or effort being involved can be found running in the opposite direction.

So, if there are so many good home based business ideas, then why haven’t you found them and what are they?

Well, I can’t tell you why you haven’t found them, but what I can do is go through just some of the many business opportunities that are available and which you might consider:

Writing Articles For Websites

Yes, you may think that this sort of work is the preserve of journalists and published authors, but that’s where you’d be mistaken. There are many websites who require content, and lots of it. The search engines love content too, and will rank a website’s importance based on its content and how important other people think it is. This is not necessarily something for you to worry about, if it seems like gibberish to you, but all you need to know is that there are countless website owners who are desperate for content on a variety of subjects, and willing to pay you to write it.

An article need only be 500 words long, and the website owner will tell you what it is that they want you to write about. Go to www.elance.com and sign up as an author. You can then browse through the myriad of ‘jobs’ that website owners have posted and see if you’re happy to write what they want.

As with all things, the better you are at something, the more you can charge, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be particularly good at writing, spelling or grammar. Even a cursory look through websites that as elance will reveal all sorts of other related tasks that people are willing to pay for.

Running A Website

Many people do not consider this option because they automatically assume that you have to be technically minded. The short answer to this is to ask whether you think that any retail shop owner is also a qualified electrician, plumber or shop-fitter? The same applies to a website; you don’t have to understand how it works in order to run a website.

Many website systems are designed to be user friendly and allow a non-technical person to easily change and manage content on the website, such as updating product information, adding new products etc.

This sort of thing is always best if it fits with your interests and/or skills. Think about what it is that you like doing and the chances are that there is a way of making money from it running a website.

Online Auction Trading

Still in the ‘online’ theme, there is a lot of money to be earned in buying and selling items through online auction sites such as eBay. Almost anything you can think of can be traded in the way online, and many people make a very healthy living from it.

If there is something that you know a lot about or have some degree of expertise in, then this may well suit you very well.

Monetising Your Skills

You may not realise it, but there are a lot of skills that you may have that other people are willing to pay for. In fact, there isn’t much that somebody somewhere wouldn’t be willing to pay for. To help get your creative juices flowing and perhaps thinking about some of the skills that you do have, here’s a list of some of the services that may be provided:

  • Genealogy Lists
  • Media Archiving & Editing (Photos, Music or Video)
  • Translation services
  • Arts & Crafts – either teaching or selling items
  • Sewing, Ironing & Dress alteration services
  • Child minding
  • Pet minding/grooming services
  • Catering services/cooking/cake-making/teaching

Virtual Secretary/Assistant Services

With many companies now employing home-based staff, and even call centres leveraging the space within people’s homes, there is now the opportunity to provide similar answering services but perhaps catering towards a more personalised niche.

The technology now exists for you to provide personal assistant services from your own home. With many businesses springing up that are also home-based, there is an increasing demand for services that were once office-based to be provided to those businesses that do not have dedicated premises or offices.

For further advice and help with setting up a Virtual Assistant (VA) service, look up the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA ) who are very helpful in this respect.
