I’m sure we’re all very well aware that there is a global recession, and that despite increasing national debt, our governments believe that spending more in an effort to ‘stimulate’ the economy is still the best approach. It’s an approach that doesn’t appear to sit very well with investors, as global stock-markets took a dramatic plunge on Friday apparently over fears of growing national debt.
On the other hand, we’re told that the UK came out of recession with a rise in GDP of 0.1% during the last quarter of 2009, yet unemployment rates still remain high, and many other factors point towards this being just an anomaly on a continuing downward trend.
For those that find themselves out of work and without any source of income, other options other than finding employment are now being considered. Many people are now starting to seize the bull by the horns and rely upon themselves to generate their own income, either through self-employment or starting up a new business.
For those that have never started a business before, the prospect of going into business for the first time can be a daunting one.
A franchise business can provide the opportunity of starting your own business without have to work everything out for yourself. You are essentially buying a ‘ready made’ business that is already ‘tried and tested’ elsewhere. The hard part of setting up the business and finding out what works and doesn’t work has already been done by someone else. Those businesses that are successful are then packaged up into a ‘business in a box’ that can be purchased and implemented elsewhere.
The attraction with the franchise model is the backup and support systems that the franchisor will provide, such as training and business systems to assist in building a successful business.
Returning to full-time employment maybe be something that those out of work may not see for quite some time to come, and the prospect of losing your home through repossession is a penalty too far. Therefore starting a franchise may seem like a good option if looking to take control of your own financial future.
However, proper research and due diligence should always be undertaken when looking at any business opportunity. There are many such ‘opportunities’ available on the Internet, which may tempt some due to the lower start-up costs, but caution here should also be exercised.
The benefits of a franchise business are in the system. Every successful business has employed a system, and any business opportunity that you consider should also use a system upon which the business in built. Speak to other business owners or franchisees who have used the same system and try to understand what you chances of success are. Nothing is ever guaranteed, and any business venture always carries some risk, but if you can minimise that risk wherever possible, through the use of proven and successful business systems, then you stand a better chance at succeeding.
